Genealogy Group formed in Delaware County

A noted sage once wrote that we cannot know where we are going until we discover where wev'e been. Most of us are descended from the Irish Diaspora that began during and following the Great Hunger. (AN GORTA MOR), and which happened to coincide with American Civil War. Today many of us are striving to connect with those ancestors who survived and came to America.

AN GORTA MOR - THE GREAT HUNGER in Ireland was triggered by the failure of the potatoe crop in 1845. The causes of this calamity however, were centuries of conquest and oppression. It was the greatest loss of life in Europe between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the beginning of World War 1. Over two million people perished and simply vanished from the face of the earth. Another two million of our ancestors emigrated, mainly to America. We deserve to know their story.

To that end an Irish American Genealogy Group has been formed in Delaware County. Participation however, is not limited to just Delaware County and we are seeking to enlarge the group and include as many who are interested from all over the Philadelphia area. Our goal is to help one another locate United States and Irish Censuses, tax records, birth and death certificates, etc.

Meetings are held at the Irish Immigration Center, 7 South Cedar Lane, Upper Darby. The center is located just off West Chester Pike (US route #3) and across from St. Laurence RC Church.

THERE ARE NO FEES OR DUES TO JOIN OUR GROUP.
